Three pillars of the Library

History, collections
and a place to work.

The WPiA UW Library is more than a collection — for over six decades it has shaped the research and teaching life of the Faculty, combining academic tradition with modern research tools.

01

History and mission

The Library was established in 1963 by merging the holdings of the departments of the Faculty of Law. Its original collection consisted of interwar publications, 19th-century works and antique prints — the latter deposited with the Antique Prints Department of the BUW. Since 2008 the Library has borne the name of the first dean of the Faculty of Law, Jan Wincenty Bandtkie. Today it serves as the principal research and teaching facility for the staff, doctoral candidates and students of WPiA UW.

02

Collections and cataloguing

The collection comprises over 100,000 volumes of books and journals in law, administration, legal history and political doctrines. Around 2,000 new titles are added every year — the most important publications issued in Poland and selected international scholarly works. The Student Reading Room offers nearly 10,000 books and 40 journal titles on open access. The Library also handles full cataloguing and provides access to the major legal databases.

03

A space for scholarly work

Since 2005 the Library has been housed in Collegium Iuridicum III on ul. Oboźna, at the heart of UW's Main Campus. The two reading rooms — the Student Reading Room and the Professors' Lektorium — offer 98 study seats, reference holdings, computer stations and the Faculty's internal network with access to Westlaw, Beck-online and HeinOnline. It is the daily working environment for the entire academic community of the Faculty.
