We are delighted to invite you to a conference, organised in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Research Centre at the University of Oxford, to commemorate the contribution to Intellectual Property (IP) law of one of the world’s leading IP scholars, Professor William Cornish.

Speakers include current and former Advocates General at the Court of Justice of the EU and academics/practitioners from renowned Universities from around the world.

The theme of the conference is how IP law continues to present both opportunities and challenges. It will be relevant to practitioners, academics, law students and anyone with an interest in IP law.

Dates: Friday 2 September (09:00-17:40) and Saturday 3 September (09:00-13:00)

- Current UW WPiA students/academic staff: Free of charge
- Academic staff/students of other Universities: 100 PLN
- Other participants: 200 PLN

Prof William (Bill) Cornish is world renowned for his contribution to IP law. Indeed, he is known as the “father of IP law” in the UK and for having introduced IP law onto the curriculum of UK law degrees. He first pioneered IP law at the London School of Economics (LSE) before becoming the inaugural holder of the Herchel Smith Chair in Intellectual Property at Cambridge University. At Cambridge Law Faculty, he was the inaugural Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS), and played an essential role in facilitating research on intellectual property, which led to the creation of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law (CIPIL).

Prof. Cornish was also an external academic member of the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property in Munich and former President of the International Association for Teaching and Research in Intellectual Property (ATRIP). His numerous publications are distinguished throughout the IP world and continue to for the bedrock of IP academic studies. 

Prof. Cornish had a long-standing relationship with the Faculty of Law & Administration at Warsaw (UW WPiA) University. He and HH George Dobry were both instrumental in creating the British Law Centre (BLC) at UW WPiA. He accompanied HRH Prince Philip in signing the common accord which created the BLC at UW WPiA in 1992. In 2013, he was awarded the Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his role in the BLC’s activities. It is tremendously sad that Prof Cornish cannot be with us at this conference, which also marks the BLC’s 30^th anniversary at UW WPiA. He was extremely proud of everything the BLC has achieved and would have relished supporting the BLC’s future at UW WPiA. His legacy is reflected in the fact that many of the conference speakers also have strong links with the BLC.
